Some events feed you. Others transform you. Flames of the Ancients—an immersive culinary ritual created by Heirloom Fire and House of Mustaine—belongs entirely to the latter.
Hosted at the historic Owl’s Hoot Barn in the Hudson Valley, this experience invited guests into a world shaped by fire, ancient winemaking traditions, and the quiet reverence of a place that has stood for more than 200 years. What unfolded was not simply a dinner, but a pilgrimage through the elements.
🔥 A Journey Rooted in Ancient Tradition
The evening began long before guests reached their seats. As the sun dipped behind the Catskills, attendees were guided through a series of elemental storytelling stations—each one inspired by monastic winemakers whose practices date back over a millennium.
Guests cooled their feet in running water, tasted warm bites served on ember‑fired stones, and sipped wine drawn from creek beds. Every moment was intentional, symbolic, and deeply sensory. It was a reminder that food and wine were once sacred acts—rituals of survival, gratitude, and community.
🍷 A Feast Crafted by Fire
Inside the open‑air pavilion, the night opened into a multi‑course feast prepared by Chef James Gop of Heirloom Fire. Known for his mastery of open‑flame cooking, Gop transformed the barn into a living hearth—spruce branches crackling, iron suspended over flame, and ingredients kissed by smoke and ember.
Courses included:
fire‑finished lamb suspended over evergreen boughs
bone‑marrow vessels filled with crudo and rosé broth
ember‑roasted vegetables layered with wild herbs
desserts plucked from edible vines and woodland textures
Each dish was paired with wines from House of Mustaine, whose lineage traces back to vineyards first planted by Benedictine monks in the 800s. Their pours carried the weight of history—earthy, expressive, and perfectly matched to the primal nature of the meal.
🌿 A Venue That Holds the Story
Owl’s Hoot Barn, with its restored 1840s Dutch bank barn and sweeping Hudson Valley landscape, offered the ideal setting for a night built on heritage. Its weathered beams, open fields, and quiet, old‑world charm created a backdrop that felt both ancient and alive.
The venue’s new conservatory—crafted from upcycled 1800s windows and barnwood—added another layer of history to the experience. It was as if the space itself breathed with the stories being told.
🔥 A Night That Lives Beyond the Table
Flames of the Ancients was more than a culinary event. It was a meditation on craft, memory, and the rituals that connect us to those who came before. Guests didn’t just dine—they participated, listened, tasted, and moved through a narrative shaped by fire and time.
This film captures the heart of that night:the glow of the flames, the movement of the chefs, the reverence of the guests, and the ancient traditions that inspired every detail.
